Key Background:
In a major move within the legal business sector, The Lawyer has been acquired by Legal Benchmarking Group (LBG) from Centaur Media for £43 million. The deal, which represents a multiple of 16 times the publication’s operating profit, is expected to be completed in early October.
This is LBG’s first acquisition since being bought by Triple Private Equity in June 2025. LBG is known for providing research, rankings, and awards for law, tax, and advisory firms globally. Its brands include IFLR, Managing IP, International Tax Review, and Benchmark Litigation.
Adding The Lawyer helps LBG cover more specialized areas, including law firm leadership, operations, and business strategy. The deal strengthens LBG’s position as a top provider of insights and intelligence for law firms around the world.
Catrin Griffiths, editor of The Lawyer, expressed her enthusiasm about the deal: “This is great news for The Lawyer. The partnership with LBG and Triple gives us a bigger global platform while maintaining our distinctive brand and voice. “We are especially thrilled to grow our international presence and continue developing our Global Elite coverage of the transatlantic legal market,” said The Lawyer’s editor.
Tom St Denis, CEO of Legal Benchmarking Group, added, “We are very pleased to welcome The Lawyer to LBG. Their expertise fits well with our current offerings and will help us provide valuable insights to law firms around the world.”
The legal advisory teams played a key role in facilitating the transaction. Skadden partner Rich Youle and counsel Benjamin Davies advised Triple Private Equity, while Shoosmiths partner Nick McCarthy, alongside Centaur legal directors Katie Yorke and Laura Gould, provided guidance to the seller.
Shoosmiths Chief Executive David Jackson remarked, The Lawyer is a reputable publication in the legal sector offering direction, leadership, and innovation. We are delighted to have been involved with Centaur Media on this transaction, and we wish Centaur Media well on LBG.
Through this acquisition, The Lawyer will expand to an international reach and continue to be a reliable source of knowledge to law firms.
