Prime Highlights

  • Bubba Wallace was the first Black driver to win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s Brickyard 400.
  • He ended a 100-race winning streak drought with a photo finish, edging Kyle Larson by 0.222 seconds.

Key Fact

  • His first crown jewel victory was in the NASCAR Cup Series.
  • The victory qualified him for the NASCAR Playoffs, provided a momentum shift to 23XI Racing.

Key Background

Bubba Wallace became the first African American driver to win a big-name NASCAR race on the hallowed 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The most coveted NASCAR event, the Brickyard 400, witnessed Wallace stage a drive for the ages despite the heavy pressure.

Wallace fought through 18-minute rain delay and two hot-stage overtime restart, woefully short on fuel for the last laps. Defending five-time champion Kyle Larson closed what was a five-second deficit to slightly over three seconds on the last six laps, making it suspenseful. Assisted by sound strategy from his pit crew, Wallace was able to hold position, taking the line a 0.222 seconds ahead of Larson.

The win ended Wallace’s 110-race drought, his previous one having been at Kansas in 2022. It was his third Cup Series win, but more importantly, his first at one of the four crown jewel races — solidifying his status as a leading NASCAR driver. It also ensures he will be among those in the 2025 NASCAR Playoffs with four races remaining before the cutoff.

For basketball great Michael Jordan’s and race driver Denny Hamlin’s 23XI Racing, this milestone further solidifies the team’s emerging reputation and resolve to perform under persistent adversity, like in-court fights over its charter status. Wallace’s milestone is another than one of individual resolve but one to bring diversity and competitiveness to motorsport today too.
