Background

Samsung Electronics has appointed its mobile chief TM Roh as co-CEO, marking a return to the company’s traditional dual-leadership structure. Roh will also lead the device experience division, which oversees Samsung’s smartphones, TVs and home appliances.

The decision restores a system that separates management of the chip division and the consumer division. Samsung had been operating under a single-CEO model since March, when co-CEO Han Jong-Hee passed away unexpectedly. Roh has been serving as acting head of the consumer business since April, making his promotion expected by many industry observers.

Analysts say Samsung’s choice signals a desire to strengthen areas where the company is already performing well. Ryu Young-ho, senior analyst at NH Investment & Securities, described the appointment as “safe and predictable,” noting that memory chips and mobile devices are Samsung’s strongest businesses this year. He added that placing Roh in a top leadership role shows that Samsung wants to deepen its focus on these divisions.

Ryu also highlighted the progress in Samsung’s memory business under co-CEO Jun Young-hyun, who leads the chip division. He said the company is benefiting from a favourable market and is working to narrow the gap with rivals in the race to develop advanced AI chips.

Industry analysts believe that the dual-CEO model will help Samsung sharpen its strategy as global competition intensifies in both consumer electronics and semiconductors. Samsung is strengthening its performance in key markets and preparing for future technology changes, with Roh leading the device experience division and Jun Young-hyun in charge of the chip segment.

The leadership change marks an important step as Samsung seeks to reinforce its competitiveness in the rapidly evolving AI and mobile landscape.
