Hong Kong’s high-speed rail network will expand its reach with the addition of 16 new mainland destinations starting January 26, railway operator MTR Corporation announced on Sunday. The move will strengthen transport links between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland and make cross-border travel easier for passengers.
With the latest expansion, travelers from West Kowloon Station will be able to directly access 110 destinations across the mainland. The new destinations include well-known tourist and business cities like Nanjing and Wuxi in Jiangsu Province, as well as Hefei in Anhui Province. Travelers visit these cities for both leisure and work, and the new routes are expected to attract more passengers.
MTR Corporation also announced service upgrades on existing routes. The overnight sleeper train between Hong Kong and Shanghai Hongqiao will be enhanced, with departures increasing from four days a week to daily operations. In addition, train frequencies on several busy routes, including services to and from Guangzhou Station, will be raised to meet growing travel needs.
Jeny Yeung, Chief Executive Officer of MTR Corporation, said the expansion reflects close cooperation between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government, mainland authorities, and railway operators. She noted that the company will continue to add destinations and improve services to support smooth cross-boundary movement.
According to Yeung said the high-speed rail network creates economic opportunities and supports national development. It improves connections, helping tourism, business, and personal ties between Hong Kong and the mainland.
The latest expansion strengthens Hong Kong’s role as a major transport hub in the Greater Bay Area and beyond.
