Background
Digital payments platform Venmo has launched a new cashback rewards program, called Venmo Stash, to give users incentives when they spend with selected brands or use Venmo’s financial products. The PayPal-owned company said the program will reward customers with up to 5% cash back, deposited directly into their Venmo Mastercard Debit Card.
The initiative aims to increase user engagement and retain funds within the Venmo ecosystem by encouraging more frequent use of the app’s services. Venmo explained that customers will earn 1% cash back when they spend from their Venmo balance, 2% when they activate auto reloads, and 5% when they receive Direct Deposits each month.
Unlike traditional credit card reward programs that categorize spending by type, Venmo Stash allows users to select from curated bundles of brands. For example, users can choose sets including McDonald’s, TikTok Shop, Uber, and Uber Eats, or another featuring Amazon, DoorDash, Domino’s, and Walgreens.
The new rewards strategy matches younger consumers’ changing payment habits, especially Gen Z. Studies from eMarketer and Morning Consult show that only 39% of Gen Z often use credit cards, while 63% prefer debit cards or “buy now, pay later” (BNPL) options like Affirm, PayPal Pay Later, or Klarna.
Venmo said the program will expand next year, allowing users to earn rewards when paying with Venmo at partner merchants across its nationwide network, enhancing convenience and value for everyday transactions.
