India Approves Dixon–Vivo Joint Venture to Strengthen Domestic Smartphone Manufacturing

India has approved the long-awaited joint venture between Dixon Technologies and Vivo Mobile India, marking another significant milestone in the country’s efforts to expand domestic electronics manufacturing. The approval allows the two companies to establish a majority Indian-owned manufacturing venture focused on producing smartphones and other electronic devices, reinforcing India’s ambition to become a global electronics production hub.

Under the agreement, Dixon Technologies will hold a 51% stake in the joint venture, while Vivo Mobile India will own the remaining 49%. The new company will operate as an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), producing smartphones and electronic products for the domestic market while supporting the country’s broader manufacturing ecosystem. The approval also reflects India’s continued push to strengthen local value addition and reduce dependence on imported electronics.

Partnership Supports India’s Manufacturing Ambitions

The joint venture represents another step in India’s growing transformation into a global smartphone manufacturing destination. Over the past several years, international smartphone brands and electronics manufacturers have steadily expanded production capacity in the country, encouraged by government initiatives promoting domestic manufacturing, supply chain development, and export growth.

By combining Dixon’s manufacturing expertise with Vivo’s product development and market presence, the partnership is expected to increase local production capacity while creating new opportunities across the electronics supply chain. The venture will manufacture smartphones and other electronic devices on an OEM basis, supporting both domestic demand and future export opportunities.

The approval was granted under India’s foreign investment framework applicable to companies from countries sharing a land border with India. With regulatory clearance now in place, both companies can proceed with incorporating the joint venture and establishing manufacturing operations after completing customary business formalities.

Expanding India’s Electronics Ecosystem

India’s electronics manufacturing sector has witnessed rapid expansion as global companies diversify production beyond traditional manufacturing locations. Government policies encouraging local production have attracted investments across smartphones, consumer electronics, semiconductors, and electronic components, strengthening the country’s industrial base.

Industry observers believe the Dixon–Vivo partnership will further enhance India’s electronics manufacturing capabilities by increasing production capacity, supporting component suppliers, and creating additional employment opportunities. Local manufacturing also enables companies to respond more efficiently to domestic demand while improving supply chain resilience.

For Dixon Technologies, the venture expands its position as one of India’s leading electronics manufacturing services providers. The company already manufactures products for several global consumer electronics brands across categories including smartphones, televisions, home appliances, and lighting products. The new partnership further strengthens its presence in the rapidly growing smartphone manufacturing segment.

Strengthening India’s Position in Global Smartphone Production

The approval reflects India’s broader strategy of developing a globally competitive electronics manufacturing ecosystem capable of serving both domestic and international markets. As smartphone demand continues to grow worldwide, increasing local production capacity has become an important component of the country’s industrial and export strategy.

Industry experts believe partnerships between global technology companies and Indian manufacturers will continue driving investment, technology transfer, and supply chain development across the sector. These collaborations also support the growth of ancillary industries, including component manufacturing, logistics, packaging, and testing services.

With the Dixon–Vivo joint venture now moving forward, India’s smartphone manufacturing industry is expected to enter another phase of expansion. The partnership reinforces the country’s emergence as a key global production destination while supporting long-term objectives of increasing domestic manufacturing, strengthening exports, and building a more resilient electronics ecosystem.
